Basement Remodel

MHI Interiors remodeled this Taylor Basement. The entire basement was framed and drywalled. USG 2' x 4' ceiling tiles - Radar Series were installed, Sherwin Williams paint was used throughout the space. A half bath was installed using Merillat Cabinetry for the vanity, Marbelite top for the counter along with Delta faucet and Kohler toilet. A snack bar was added between columns and we curved the drywall for a more interesting look. The end result gave the homeowners a space that the entire family can use.

Looking through my online Traditional Magazine, I came across these pictures that reinforce Pantone's color of the year - Tangerine Tango

This white room really pops with the color accents.

This room's dark wood is brought out with the "orange" accessories on the shelving unit.

Both rooms are different in style and color, but were able to use the same accent color to give visual interest.

It is a New Year and time to update your home. Kohler has introduced a new glass sink - "Whist" glass lavatory. This is an undermount sink that comes in blue, green, or brown tones and has a slight "ripple" texture. List price is about $300.00.

Install this sink in your bathroom with either a glass countertop - Think Glass is a great resource for ideas or Corian has and Illumination Series of material that would give a distinct look to your bathroom.

2012 Pantone Color of the Year

Each year, Pantone announces what color will be "The Color of the Year" for home and fashion. This year it is "Tangerine Tango"

This is a great color. In a neutral room, use this color in pillows, rugs, or accessories. This is also a great color to use as an accent wall. If you are adventurous, paint all walls in this color, use crisp white trim and white decor -could be a show stopper.

This color does seem bright, but with the yellow undertones, it is a very "Warm" color and will give your room a Cozy Feel. If your home is neutral, try this color (or some version of it) and give your room a whole new look.

Three Season Room in Novi

MHI Interiors had recently completed a Three Season Room at a home in Novi. We enclosed the outdoor space with a contrasting block, added new windows, and a spiral staircase was installed to an upper balcony area. Inside the room, all electrical was updated, for the flooring, we installed colored stamped concrete, the walls were insulated and tongue and grooved knotty pine was installed to keep the rustic look the homeowner was looking for. Using the existing footprint, we created a space the homeowner can use at least 8 months out of the year.

Here is a new kitchen faucet from KWC. It is the single-lever Livello faucet. This is for the person who likes the "Ultra" Modern look. It has a 90 degree profile and comes in chome or stainless steel finish. Lever can be put on the left, right or in the front. It has a 360 degree swiveling range, a 9" spout and a horizontial pull-out spray. Retail price for this is $790 in chrome or $1,050 in stainless.

If you like this style - Kohler has the Purist line and is not as expensive. This retails at about $425 without a pull-our sprayer.

When I need ideas or inspiration for a client's home, like most people I look through magazines. Most pictures for kitchens, bathrooms, etc. show very large rooms with elaborate design. Don't be intimated by these large rooms. Look at the details to see how you can use them in your own space.

I like half bathrooms. The smaller space is not overwhelming and will allow you to "let your creative hair down". Do something a little different that you would not normally do in the rest of your home.

Here are some pictures from Traditional Home Magazine. These bathrooms are larger, but you can take elements from these spaces and put into a smaller bathroom.

This bathroom has a double vanity, but this idea can

be adapted to a half bath for a contemporary look.

Vanities are not always cabinets. You can convert any size
table (your sink must fit) into a vanity.

I like this bathroom because it shows how you can use the same tile in different patterns. The floor is in a herringbone pattern, face of tub in diamond and walls in tub in a horizontal/vertical pattern. You can save money using the same tile and in most cases, bigger tiles are cheaper per sq. ft. than smaller.

West Bloomfield Kitchen Remodel

This West Bloomfield Kitchen is a galley style kitchen. We updated the cabinetry with Maple Kraftmaid Cabinets - Slab Style in Carmel Finish. Granite counters in Blue Sapphire were installed by Leonardo's Marble and Granite. We were able to add additional cabinets and give the homeowner an eat in kitchen space. The overall space is updated with lots of storage.

Traditional Home E-magazine, here are some pictures for thought.

Why I like this room is the use of color. The palette is neutral with a pop of color. The room does have a calming effect but with some interest with the use of a strong color. Also, the glass and metal table is mixed with wood chairs. Both items are contemporary/modern and work well together. The wood floor (different color than the chairs) brings in the "warmth" to the room.

Half bathrooms are a great place to do something really different. The space is a mixture of traditional and modern elements. The wall has white subway tile on the lower portion and a strong pattern wall paper on the upper half. A traditional mirror accompanied with a very modern vanity just work together. Even though this room is a black and white room, the patterns make it interesting.

When you are thinking about remodeling a space in your home, think about the function first and try to mix styles and finishes. Doing this, your room should be able to stand the test of time.

In this Canton, MI bathroom, we installed 12 x 12 Florida Tile, Savannah Plantation Series in Beige on floor and shower walls; 1 x 1 AlysEdwards Haute Glass Tile in Honey Expresso Iridescent as a deco strip in shower and vanity area. In the shower, a niche was added along with corner shelving

The vanity is "Merillat" Seneca Ridge Style in Kona Finish with "Corian" Counter top in Tumbleweed Color. Vanity Faucet is "Delta" Lahara Series #2538SSMPU with matching towel ring, towel bar and toilet paper holder.

Family Room Renovation

This Livonia Family Room was updated with new cabinetry and tile on the firplace and hearth. MHI Interiors constructed the shelving units using "Merillat" cabinetry and custom built cabinetry. The cabints are maple "Merillat" Classic, Fusion Style in a Kona Finish. We built the shelving units to match and maple counters in a natural finish.

The tile is "Olympia" Boutique Nitay Arizonia Brick. We installed it in a vertical pattern.

The tile on the hearth is "Olympia" Tile - Carbon Black Leather. Both tiles were purchased at Beaver Tile and Stone in Farmington Hills, MI.

White is a color

Don't be afraid to use "White" as a main color when remodeling your space. I found this picture on the "Traditional Home" site. White is used for the tile, bathtub, sink and the walls except for the accent wall color (which is a great choice). Wood flooring adds warmth to the space. Pay attention to details in your space; in this space the arch shower curtain holder, shades on the sconces and the small ledge above the sink. All these details make a room. This entire space has a clean look and will not go out of style anytime soon.

Here is another space from "Traditional Home" that the color "White" is dominant. Once again wood flooring and furniture add the warmth to the space along with some area rugs. (notice that they do not match - makes it more interesting). White is a great color to use and will stand the test of time in your decor.

Kohler "Farm Style" Sink

KOHLER is reintroducing the "Farm Style" or "Apron Style" sink. I received this e-mail highlighting this iconic style. This is a great focal point in any kitchen. A white cast iron sink can compliment traditional styles and a stainless steel version will fit into a modern style kitchen. Check out the KOHLER website for these sinks and all their products.

This Wyandotte bungalow kitchen was dark and outdated. MHI Interiors transformed the space to a light and modern space. Merillat Masterpiece "Montressano" Cabinets were used in Dove Grey painted finish. Granite counters in Bianco Romano were installed and "Jeffrey Court" Moana Loa 4x4 field tiles were used in the backsplash along with "Olympia" Boutique Tyrol deco strip. The 15" D pendant light is from "Hudson Valley", Beacon #4225 in satin nickel, faucet is a "Kohler" Clariette with pull down sprayer. A custom cabinet was built for the wine cooler and undercabinet moulding completes the look of the kitchen.

I had seen this cabinet at a Kitchen and Bath show last year in Chicago and could not wait until it came to the market. Well, this summer Merillat will introduce it's new CornerStore cabinets. The corner acccess base cabinet has 3 full extension drawers and 2 pull-out pantry trays. The drawers are positioned in the center and offer two drawer sizes. The pull-out trays have an adjustable center shelf to accommodate various size items. Looking forward using this cabinet in kitchen designs.

Kohler has introduced a new tub - Underscore Cube. This White or Biscuit color tub is 48" x 48" x 34" and accomodates two bathers. At the 2011 Winter Novi Home Improvement Show. This space is 10' x 10'. Merillat Cabinetry Fusion Style in Kona Finish was installed. We made the tops for the bottom cabinets, taller cabinet, the floating shelves and stained all to match cabinetry. As an option, you could use granite, quartz, or solid surface material for the tops over the cabinetry. The mock TV is 42", but a larger TV could be installed. Creative paint detail as personality to the space. Small spaces can look stylish and this is one example of many that can be used.

This bathroom is a perfect example of what you can do in a small space with creative planning. The room is 5' w X 2' 6" d. Cabinets for this space are Merillat Masterpiece - Montressano Cherry cabinets in the Kaffe finish. On the wall next to the sink, a furniture drawer and spice drawer cabinets are used for storage. Furniture drawer cabinets and a towel bar make up the vanity. The entire bathroom is in warm, neutral tones mixed with cool grey. This color combination allows the vanity to be a focal point. A vessel sink, a wall mount faucet and simple accessories finish off this "Zen" bathroom.

This kitchen has many things I like.

Lighting is an important function in your home, don't forget to add lighting to your cabinets? Cabinetry lighting adds a warm glow to a space. When there is an island, why not mix up cabinet styles. One of our clients has a theater room, but wanted to add cherry woodwork to enhance the room. MHI Interiors built the wainscoting around the room, constructed fluted columns, crown and quarter round base moulding. The wainscoting has recessed panels with embossed trim. The platform in the seating area was reconstructed and LED lights were added at each riser. Movies can be watched and games played on their 106" screen.

MHI Interiors divided up the space to meet its clients needs. We pay attention to construction details and design details. This two month project gave the homeowners a space to entertain and enjoy family time.

MHI Interiors is currently remodeling a basement in Novi, MI. About 2,300 sq. ft of space remodeled will include a kitchen area, play room, bedroom, bathroom with shower and separate open areas for entertainment and work-out equipment. Heating and cooling has been updated to incorporate a separate zone from the main area of the home. Recessed lighting, speaker wire and cable has been installed. We have finished framing and insulation of project. Archs have been installed to separate areas. Entire basement will be drywalled (including the ceiling except in unfinished area). Pictures listed show the basement after framing stage.

Tile Options for your Home

Tile can give you endless design possibilities that fit your style. There are many options of tile: ceramic, porcelain, glass, and all natural stones. Porcelain and ceramic are widely used and both are good for just about any application. The main difference between the two is that porcelain is fired at a higher temperature which makes it denser and harder. This enables the tile to have a higher heat tolerance and less prone to stain and moisture.

A common application for tile is to use a less expensive field tile (main area) and add more decorative accent tiles, such as glass tiles to create a custom pattern.(more expensive). Tile can be laid in a common "square" pattern or the tile can be placed on a diagonal pattern. Remember, when choosing a pattern lay out for your floor or wall, the more cuts you have per tile, labor will increase for the application.

You can create a "rug" effect using different colors. Lay out a larger field tile (ex. 12" x 12") and add smaller tile in a different color along with an accent border tile. This is great for foyer applications as indicated in one of our pictures.

Since there are so many choice with tile, I would suggest to go to a tile store. These stores have designers who are familiar with all tiles and can give you the best advice when picking out your tile. Beaver Tile and Stone at 24700 Drake Road, Farmington Hills, MI is a good source to start.

Arches

To add interest to a room, add arches. Hallway entrances do not always have to be a drywall square. Here MHI Interiors framed hallways in oak and arched the top for a dramatic effect. The oak was stained with Sherwin Williams medium stain to create a traditional design.

To achieve a contemporary design, arches could be done in a maple wood with a darker stain or in drywall and painted to match room decor.

Columns and Ceilings

Columns can set the design tone in a room. A simple and cost effective way to dress up a column is to drywall it and add moulding to create a recessed panel. Paint the column in either a tone on tone color or accent the recessed area in a darker color than the column.

When remodeling your space, don't forget to look up. A ceiling treatment can bring your room to a new level. Tray or Trey (each is correct) ceilings are a great way to add LED lighting to create soft glow ambience.

Kitchen Remodel

This kitchen was remodeled by removing old drywall, soffits and replaced with new drywall, updated electrical and plumbing. We had installed Maple "Merillat" Classic Cabinets, Labelle Style in Toffee finish. Counter tops are Granite - color is Santa Cecila Light. A "Pro-Flo" double bowl stainless steel undermount sink was installed with a "Delta" stainless steel faucet #978SSSD. Walls were painted with "Sherwin Williams" paint - Maple Leaf Red. 13" x 13" ceramic tile was installed in kitchen area and attached dining area. For finishing touches, crown moulding was installed above cabinets and base moulding was installed for transition between wall and tile floor.

KITCHEN REMODEL

This is a smaller kitchen, but we were able to utilize all space effectively. Installed "Merillat" Classic Maple Seneca Ridge Square Top Cabinets with Toffee Finish. Installed "Cambria" quartz countertops with Tile backsplash. Special features of this kitchen are: Two spice racks; one upper and one lower to fit customer's need and was able to install appliance garage flush with wall to maximize counter space.

Turquoise - Color for 2010

Custom Wine Cabinet
